This first-ever retrospective of the dean of American sports cartooning “stars” baseball greats such as Joe DiMaggio, Yogi Berra, Lou Gehrig, and many others.
In Fantagraphics’ ceaseless effort to rediscover every world-class cartoonist in the history of the medium, we turn your attention to a neglected part of the art form―sports cartooning―and to its greatest practitioner―Willard Mullin. The years 1930-1970 were the Golden Age of both American sports and American comic strips, when giants strode their respective fields―Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and Hank Aaron in one, George (Krazy Kat) Herriman, Milton (Steve Canyon) Caniff, Walt (Pogo) Kelly in the other―and Mullin was there, straddling both fields, recording every major player and event in the mid-20th-century history of baseball.
“The Road to the 1986 World Series” is an open edition print by artist Daniel Duffy. Duffy wrote out the date, opponent, W/L and score from every game during the Mets Championship Season. This is the perfect piece for any dedicated New York Mets fan.

DON PEDICINI JR. Thurman Munson NY Yankees original art portrait 4″ x 6″
To commemorate the newly-built Shea Stadium, Mullin depicts a mischevious Casey Stengel and youthful New York Mets character ready to pull the rug out from an unsuspecting National League. Even when creating illustrations, Mullin shied away from a strictly decorative mindset by offering visual commentary — much in the same way as an editorial cartoonist.
